This is an introductory,
hands-on tour concentrating on American social history, 1640-1840. Students
learn about education, medicine, dining, social customs, lighting and
technology, and collecting. This one-hour tour usually follows a costume
presentation. |

Life
in Early America/Painting
|
|
This combination
tour concentrates on American paintings with some hands-on objects relating
to social history. It is designed for elementary school students who have
had art history as part of their curriculum. The costume presentation
precedes this one hour tour. |

Middle
School Tours and High School Tours

History
|
|
This one-hour
tour concentrates on significant developments in American history. It
discusses the settling of the colonies, the events leading up to the American
Revolution, the Revolution, westward expansion towards the Mississippi,
women's education, and Texas history. It is normally preceded by the costume
presentation. |

Painting
|
|
This tour discusses
the American paintings in the collection, and teaches students how to
analyze them. It is given by specially trained docents. This one-hour
tour is preceded by a slide lecture that gives an overview of American
painting. |

Classics
|
|
A one-hour tour
intended for students studying Latin or western civilization, the Classics
Tour relates objects in the collection to classical Roman culture. It
is preceded by a slide lecture that discusses the discoveries in Pompeii
and Herculaneum and the influence of these discoveries on western civilization. |

Decorative
Arts
|
|
This one-hour
tour focuses on the objects for which Bayou Bend is so well known. Students
learn about decorative styles from the Early Baroque to the Rococo Revival.
Particularly suitable for students studying design, the Decorative Arts
tour is usually preceded by the costume presentation. |

Advanced
Placement History (AP)
|
|
This one-hour
tour is designed for students with strong history backgrounds and is tailored
to the students' ability. Generally, it starts with the colonization of
America and ends with the Industrial Revolution. The tour is given by
docents with special training in history and is preceded by the costume
presentation. |

Garden
Tours
|
Garden Tours, offered on
Tuesday and Friday mornings, allow students to explore Bayou Bend's
14 acres of beautiful gardens and woodlands.
