All Bayou Bend Teacher Workshops occur on site at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, One Westcott Street, Houston, Texas.

Now that pastimes include surfing the Internet, watching video, and talking on cellular phones--things unheard of a few decades ago--it is hard to imagine what our ancestors did in their leisure time. This workshop explores the pastimes of early Americans: sewing, reading, gaming, playing music, and drinking--both tea and alcohol.

In this workshop, teachers study a spectrum of American holidays, from the prohibition of Christmas celebrations in the 17th century to the festive family Christmases of the 19th. In between, we will study American celebrations of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, weddings, balls, and other events. A resource packet with lesson plans will be provided.

The changing role of women's education, work, and influence is explored through the objects used by women across the centuries. Teachers will receive a resource packet including slides.

Participants will learn how to "read" an object, and then peel away layer after layer of meaning, in the end learning not just about the object, but the maker, the user, and the culture in which it was made.
