Getting Started

What are decorative arts?
Decorative arts are the arts associated with the creation of useful items such as furniture, ceramics, glassware, metalwork, and textiles. These are the things we use in our everyday lives. While some furniture, ceramics, glassware, and so forth are merely "things," others are truly "works of arts" carefully crafted by master cabinetmakers and craftsmen and valued for their aesthetics as well as their utility.
Refining your research topic
Unlike much library research, which generally begins with a research question, decorative arts research usually begins with an object such as a chair, a candlestick, or a painting, and then asks several questions to learn more about the object:
  • What is it?
  • When was it made?
  • Who made it?
  • Who or what influenced it?

Once you have decided the nature of the questions you would like answered, you are ready to begin locating your information sources.
