Types of Information

The nature of your research questions will determine how many and what types of information sources to use. While scholarly researchers will rely more on original, primary sources of information, students may consult secondary sources available in their school or local public libraries.

Primary Sources
  • bill of sale
  • manuscript or diagram
  • old newspapers
  • old sales catalogs
  • letters, diaries, and wills
  • birth, death, and marriage records
  • household inventories
  • census records
  • interviews with relatives somehow associated with the object
Primary sources are original documents or sources of information.

Secondary Sources
  • reference books
  • textbooks
  • trade books
  • journal articles
Secondary sources are information sources about an original source that analyze, discuss, explain, evaluate, interpret, or restate the original source.
