The eighteenth-century gentleman went to work without leaving home. The concept of a home office is nothing new. In fact, until well into the nineteenth century, most businessmen and craftsmen worked in or near the home. Only with the onset of industrialization in the 1830s did the American workplace move from the home to a separate place of business.
