| American collectors have long prized silver. Bayou Bend's extraordinary collection of American silver is on view in the Newport Room. Trained in England, skilled silversmiths were at work in America by the early seventeenth century. But because England limited the amount of silver that could be exported to America, early colonial silver is extremely rare. Silver objects were usually made to order, often using metal supplied by the client. |
