The Murphy Room contains many superb examples of colonial furniture, but most early American homes were sparsely equipped with only rudimentary furnishings. Most immigrants who arrived in America during the seventeenth century were poor. |

Their
houses usually consisted of a single room that was used for sleeping,
dining, and recreation. The
basic but sturdy construction methods that were used to build these
houses were also employed to create furniture. Because oak was popular
in England and plentiful in America, it was the wood preferred by
furniture makers. |
