Locating Information

Reference Materials  
Reference materials are good for locating background information or for getting an overview of your topic.
  DIRECT SOURCES contain the information within the source. Some examples of direct sources are dictionaries and encyclopedias, fact sources, biographical sources, geographical sources, and chronologies.
   

DICTIONARIES and ENCYCLOPEDIAS may be general or subject specific. They contain definitions and short articles.
Examples

   

FACT SOURCES, which include yearbooks, almanacs, manuals, and directories, are useful as quick reference to factual information.
Examples

   

BIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES provide information about famous people, such as where they were born and died, education, career, and major accomplishments.
Examples

   

GEOGRAPHICAL SOURCES include maps, globes, atlases, gazetteers (dictionaries of place names), and travel guidebooks.
Examples

    CHRONOLOGIES list historical events in the order that they occurred.
