Reference materials are good for locating background information or for getting an overview of your topic. |
DIRECT SOURCES contain the information within the source. Some examples of direct sources are dictionaries and encyclopedias, fact sources, biographical sources, geographical sources, and chronologies. |
DICTIONARIES
and ENCYCLOPEDIAS
may be general or subject specific. They contain definitions and
short articles. |
FACT
SOURCES,
which include
yearbooks, almanacs, manuals, and directories, are useful as quick
reference to factual information. |
BIOGRAPHICAL
SOURCES provide
information about famous people, such as where they were born and
died, education, career, and major accomplishments. |
GEOGRAPHICAL
SOURCES include
maps, globes, atlases, gazetteers (dictionaries of place names),
and travel guidebooks. |
CHRONOLOGIES
list historical
