Locating Information
Periodicals
Periodicals are publications which are issued regularly (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly). They include newspapers, magazines, and journals. Journals are narrow in their focus and contain articles written by and for professionals and experts in that discipline. Scholarly journals are usually refereed, i.e., experts in the field review and approve each article before it can be published in the journal.

World Wide Web
A variety of search engines and subject directories are available for locating information on the Web. The Web is great for locating very current information, but be aware that no one controls the Internet. Many Web documents do not go through a formal publication process as do books and journals. This means that anyone can publish information on the Web, and researchers have no sure way of knowing if the information is accurate. Search tools for the Web include search engines, meta-search engines, and subject directories.
SEARCH ENGINES with large databases are most frequently created by robots that roam the Web finding new sites, updating old ones, and deleting obsolete ones. They are best for comprehensive searches for specific or unique information.
Examples
META-SEARCH ENGINES search more than one search engine at a time and then report the results from the various search engines. A meta-search engine is a good way to begin a Web search.
Examples
SUBJECT DIRECTORIES contain sites which have been selected by humans and then assigned to subject categories. As a result, subject directories are smaller and often provide better, more reliable results than search engines.
